(Worthy News) – The United States is moving forward with an ambitious new homeland defense system, with officials confirming that the “Golden Dome” layered missile shield is expected to be operational by the summer of 2028.
President Donald Trump first unveiled the initiative last year as part of a broader effort to counter rapidly advancing global missile threats. The system is designed as a multi-layered defense network integrating ground, air, and space-based sensors capable of detecting, tracking, and intercepting incoming projectiles.
Speaking before lawmakers, Gen. Michael Guetlein, who oversees the project, said the system will provide protection against a wide spectrum of threats. “We’re going to deliver an operational capability by the summer of 2028 that will be able to protect the homeland against a variety of threats,” he told the House Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee.
Defense officials emphasized that the Golden Dome will address emerging dangers that current systems struggle to counter, including hypersonic missiles, cruise missiles, and advanced drone threats. Marc Berkowitz, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy, described the program as “the cornerstone of our homeland defense posture,” noting that existing U.S. defenses rely largely on a single layer of ground-based interceptors.
The system’s estimated cost has risen to approximately $185 billion, reflecting its scale and complexity. Officials argue the investment is necessary as adversaries continue to expand their capabilities.
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard recently warned that nations such as China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and Pakistan are developing increasingly sophisticated missile systems capable of reaching the U.S. homeland.
While the Golden Dome draws inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome, the American version will operate on a much larger scale, defending a vast geographic area against a broader range of threats.
As global tensions rise and weapons technology accelerates, U.S. officials say the Golden Dome represents a critical step in restoring strategic deterrence and ensuring the nation’s security in the years ahead.
